Newest Lifetime Members

Congratulations to the Guild’s two newest Lifetime Membership recipients: Donna Bowker (left) and Nancy Payne (right).  We’ve asked the latter two to share their experiences with quilting and bit of information about themselves:

Nancy inherited two quilts from her grandmother: a finished star friendship quilt, with friends’ names embroidered in the center, dated 1934, and an unfinished quilt with an octagon circle around a 4-pointed star, and that was how her quilting journey began.  At about the same time, and needing more information about quilting, she joined the Guild in 2000.  She sews on a Viking Epic 3 but also has a Babylock Serger Triumph, Singer Featherweight, a very old Janome, and another Viking Epic 1 as a back-up.  She likes to try a little bit of everything regarding quilting techniques but goes back and forth between piecing and hand applique.  She’s tried painting on fabric, machine applique, cloth doll making, and both hand and machine embroidery. Her favorite designer is Pearl Pereira who she found to be very patient with a lot of applique experience (during a hand applique class for the Kona Wreath pattern.)  She does quilt her own smaller quilts, however most of her quilting is done by check.  Her other hobby is photography, using her Canon mirrorless camera to capture a little bit of everything except portraits: mainly landscapes, still life, and black and white.

Donna’s quilting journey began with a chance encounter in August 1993 outside of the House of Fabrics with a lady who was renting cassette tapes of Quilt in a Day lessons.  Donna selected a King size Log Cabin as her first quilt.  She was disappointed it took three weeks to finish the top, but she was hooked.  Although her mother was an excellent seamstress, she had no family members or others in her life who quilted.  So, in 2013, recently retired and having more time for quilting and an eagerness to learn, she attended our Guild’s quilt show, picked up a brochure, and subsequently joined the Guild.  Like many of us she owns several machines:  her original Kenmore, stored in a closet, a Bernina 440 (circa 2011), a Janome 9450, bought during the pandemic because she wanted a machine with a larger throat, and a new Bernina, purchased this year at Road to California as well as a midarm, Sweet Sixteen.  Donna says she doesn’t have a favorite designer, but has learned from Eleanor Burns, Christa Watson, Angela Walters, Karen Brown, and our own Alex Tsubota.  Donna enjoys cooking; she especially likes making bread. Her family had a sourdough starter that (allegedly) was brought across the Oregon Trail. Donna’s mother cooked with it regularly. When her parents died, she brought the starter home and kept it (mostly) alive in the back of her fridge. She dabbles in sourdough bread and uses the discard for lots of other things.  She also likes to read, and she enjoyed knitting prior to quilting.

Congratulations to both Donna and Nancy!  Thank you so much for your many years of service to the Guild!
